vegetarianism: the higher taste

We had a vegetarian Labor Day Party. We served vegetarian hamburgers (veggie-burgers), vegetarian Italian Sausage and Vegetarian hot dogs with all the trimmings. Sausage with onions and peppers were the hit by far. For dessert there was a very sweet fresh watermelon. You can throw normal parties and stay vegetarian or vegan. Enjoy life but eat healthy.

I am away from home visiting a city that knows nothing about healthy foods. OK right around the universities we found vegetarian and even vegan choices. Most places are chains that pre cook their food and warm it up to serve it. This is NOT cooking! It requires NO chef! The food is mostly fried with meat and cheese on everything. This is a city that is dead and they don’t yet know it. There are tons of medical centers and hospitals to cater to the sick population. Health is rocket science but it takes some control and will power to get started. The alternative is illness and death.

It’s summer time and everyone loves to barbeque. If you are vegetarian or vegan or just cutting back on your meat intake, what do you barbeque? It turns out you can barbeque a lot of things including veggie burgers, portabella mushrooms, pizza, vegetables and seitan products. Let your imagination go and try different things and in different ways. You don’t need meat to barbeque. You will soon find out you don’t really miss it. The important thing is to try different types of vegetables to find those you like and try doing them in different ways to get the flavors you like.

I live south of Philadelphia near the Delaware border and vegetarian and vegan are still pretty much unheard of. Some restaurants are experimenting with vegan and vegetarian diets. Vedge in Philadelphia is one of our nations best restaurants and it’s all vegan! The food is delicious. Philly has several good vegetarian and vegan choices. I was in our local Whole Foods market this morning and they had a great selection of cookies and muffins that were 100% vegan prepared. I tried a blueberry muffin that was so delicious. Not overly sweet but great tasting. As more people go vegetarian or vegan or try it, food will change. Great new dishes will appear from creative minds. Explore your options and enjoy your food without giving up your health!

Healthy Choice Logo

Being vegan is not always easy in restaurants unless you live in New York or LA. I usually order vegetable side plates. Some restaurants try to accommodate vegetarians, vegans or people just trying to eat healthier but other restaurants haven’t got a clue! I was in a restaurant that is an Italian chain restaurant recently that offered healthy choice section. All the salads had cheese or bacon on them. The soups were all meat based. The entrees were meat or fish. I ended up asking for pasta and plain sauce off the menu. How hard is it to offer a healthy choice? They would make more money on it and people could eat well and healthy.
