Start today! Change your diet, stress levels, exercise, thinking and beliefs. Start eating better. Eat less animal protein (eggs, milk, meat, cheese, etc.) eat more vegetables, grains and fruits. Eat organic (yes it costs a little more but if your healthy you won’t be paying the doctor co-pays). Relax more, learn to meditate and get rid of some stress. Our way of life is stressful but you can relax and rid yourself of stress. Exercise more (even if it’s just walks around your office or home). Simple walking will lower stress and make you feel better. Start off today being positive about everything! Don’t allow yourself to go to the negative side (it’s evil). If you feel negative look for something positive and dwell on that. e all have a lot to be thankful for. Think about those things and not what is negative in our lives. If TV news and the newspapers are making you feel negative (most news is negative … it sells) stop watching or reading it. Read something positive. Hang out with positive people and avoid negative ones. Soon you will be much more positive and feel better. Believe in yourself and the fact that you can change your life and your health. Getting old is not something to fear. Getting sick is!

We are what we make ourselves!

We have talked about diet, stress, thinking positive and believe in this BLOG. These influence our environment and causes our genes to either activate or deactivate like turning a light ON or OFF. This switching of genes changes our DNA programming and may improve our health or lives or may cause illnesses and unhappiness. Our epigenetics react to what they “see” in our environment. The switching is their way of coping with change. Sometimes it works and we get better and sometimes it doesn’t work and we get sick. It is not the old DNA model we were told about. The old model said we got our parents genes for better or for worse and we were stuck with them. We do get our parents DNA as well as some of their epigenetics. DNA is basically unchangeable throughout our lives. Epigenetics can be changed by us. It is sometimes not easy to break old habits and eat better or to lower our daily stress or to think positive instead of negatively or to believe and cause a placebo effect instead of a nocebo effect. If we really try and change our lifestyles, we can be healthier without drugs. There are no bad sise effects of eating a healthy diet. We just get healthy. Try it, you might like it and the effect it has on you as a person.

We have been talking about the epigenetic influences that affect our health:

  1. Diet
  2. Exercise
  3. Positive Thinking
  4. Belief
  5. Stress

We Americans seem to break all the rules. We eat junk (non nutritious food), smoke, don’t exercise, think negative, believe we will all get sick as we get older and live highly stressed lives.  I was recently in Italy and they think and live so different from us. They eat more nutritious than we do, they do smoke more than us, they exercise as part of the cities they live in (many hills and steps), they are positive thinkers, they believe they are healthy and happy, and they lower their stress by living fun lives.

We have to learn to eat mbetter, exercise better, think and believe better and lower our stress more. This will keep us younger, happier and in love with life.

We all make New Years resolutions and most are forgotten by this time in January. It’s time to take your health seriously and into your own hands. Start exercising if you aren’t already. It doesn’t have to be strenuous. Walking is a great exercise. If it’s too cold out, join a gym and walk. Next change your diet. If you are a vegan, congratulations your are there! If you are vegetarian but not vegan start to move more toward a vegan diet. If you eat meat, eat less of it. Start by finding a veggie burger you like and substitute it for a hamburger. Dress it up with onions, avocado, mushrooms, lettuce and tomato. Try vegetables stir fries for dinner. Eat more fruit and vegetables, they are here to make us healthy! Eat less boxed, canned and frozen processed junk. If you cook it, it should come from the ground (nature). By organic and support the slow cooking movement. You will keep our planet more green and your body healthier. Let me know what you are cooking. What new things you are trying and enjoying. Bon Appetit!

Two Juglans regia walnuts.

Dr. Gregor is back talking about walnuts and weight loss. Here is a test that shows eating nuts makes you feel more full and probably causes you to eat less of other things that can make you fat. I always ask “Is it natural?” “Did cave man & woman eat it?”

Answers says that exercise and diet can prevent type 2 diabetes. Yesterday I wrote on how important exercise and diet is to health. Here is more information showing positive results on staying healthy and avoiding diabetes. We are not forced to have poor health, it is our choice. Everyday we make decisions on exercise, diet, thinking, etc that affects our cells and can affect our health. Change who you are and start living a healthier lifestyle. This use to be an adult disease but now more and more kids are getting it. As a nation we are making poor decisions about our health.

3 Quarks Daily says our muscles respond to exercise which can change how they work. They can help burn calories faster (lose weight) or can aid in development of diabetes. Muscles are important and indications are that they respond to exercise quickly but forget about it quickly as well. But new research may be showing that the epigenetic changes of exercise are longer lasting. The good news is you don’t have to kill yourself to get the benefits. Walking is a great exercise. If you use gym equipment, get trained in its proper use. Improper use can hurt you or not have as beneficial effect as using it properly.

What’s a Little Protein among Species?

Dr Lipton, [See his videos on thios topic: Video #1 Video #2] says we have about 100,000 different proteins in our body. They are basic building blocks and communications. Most proteins have multiple positions they can be in. A human muscle can be relaxed or contracted. When a relaxed muscle cell is introduced to calcium, it moves it shape to a constrained position. If our genes are the hardware and epigenetics are the software then protein is the data from our environment that triggers the software to run on the hardware.

What you are eating today is having a serious conversation with your genes. It may be making them upset and they in turn will make you depressed or sick. Your food may be delighting your genes making you well and happy. There are plenty of cases of people remaining healthy well into old age by eating and exercising properly. In my book, Food for Thought, I discuss the fact that diet, exercise, stress and thinking all affect our well being. We live in a fast food, processed diet society. What’s worse is we don’t exercise enough, we are over stressed and we think negatively. We are setting our genes up for failure! You can change your life style. You can be healthy and happy. It’s never easy to start but everyone can do it. Start today and enjoy the rest of your life.
