So What is Epigenetics Anyway – Part 6?

In this final part of the series, we ask the question, “Where is evolution taking us?” Scientists have always thought that evolution was strictly a random change to our DNA that changed us forever. Are we changing only by random changes to our DNA? I don’t think so. I believe our epigenetic program can also be changed. Our minds are changing us much faster than evolution ever did. Look at all the artificial parts we make for humans, legs, arms, hearts, etc. If our bodies became more machine, how would that change us? That is the question philosophers ask all the time. I think we are much more than the mere flesh that makes up our bodies. Epigenetics is an amazing part of us. What do we know?

We are made of a community of cells (we have more cells in our bodies than there are animals on the Earth). Each cell is a living organism that makes decisions, reproduces, eats, gets rid of waste and communicates with other cells. This community makes you unique. Where we are going is for the science fiction writers to dream up and the scientists to discover. For sure we have evolved from no cellular organisms to cells, to multicellular creatures, all the way up to humans. This is NOT the end. We are still evolving in new ways. In 1,000 years we won’t recognise ourselves at that time. Evolution is not over, we are not the end product of evolution. We are just a step to the future of mankind. After all Early man could not have imagined modern man.

Enjoy your health and your life!

Cholesterol and Breast Cancer

One in every eight woman will be diagnosed with breast cancer. That is sad but the really sad thing is it can be prevented with a dietary change. Dr Greger says that broccoli, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and other plant-based foods can reduce the risk. He says new studies show a link between cholesterol and breast cancer. The cholesterol fat feeds the cancer and allows it to grow. the study shows a 17% increase in cancer risk for women with cholesterol over 240 as opposed to those under 160. This may be why cholesterol drops in cancer patients. The cancer is eating it up.

Eggs are a major source of cholesterol and fat. All animal protein foods contain this as well (cheese, milk, meat and butter). We have reported on studies that show meat can turn ON/OFF cancer (The China Study and others see my book). Once cancer is turned ON, cholesterol and fat feed it. This allows it to grow rapidly out of control. Feed your body correctly and you will enjoy good health!

Meat Increases Risk of Cancer while Plants Decrease Risk!

The PCRM says a recent study of 9,287 individuals showed a 15% increase in risk of colorectal cancer with consumption of red meat and a 11% increased risk with consumption of processed meats. These risks increased to 20 and 39 percent with two different genetic variants. Consumption of fruits & vegetables decreased risks of colorectal cancer.

The PCRM says “More than half of the meat products Americans consume are red meat, and nearly a quarter are processed meat.1 Processed meat products include bacon, deli slices, sausage, hot dogs, and any other meat products that have been preserved with additives or otherwise manipulated to alter color, taste, and durability. Current dietary guidelines recommend limiting red and processed meat products, but eliminating them may be the safest option, because scientific research continues to identify health hazards these products pose. What Makes These.”

If you are concerned about your health, eliminate red meats and processed meats from you diet and increase drastically your consumption of fruits and vegetables. It’s your life, CHOOSE YOUR FUEL WISELY!

Who are we Humans?

This is a bit philosophical but bear with me. What makes us human? Are we really smarter than other animals? What is our purpose in life? These may seem like religious questions but the great Greek Philosophers ponder these often. If we look at our DNA and compare it to other mammals we see that it is very similar. Not enough difference to account for what we have become. It is like a piano with an extra key. What then caused our brains to differ, for us to stand upright, for us to build things and for us to invent technology? I believe it is our epigenetics!

Epigenetics compared to DNA is like music compared to a piano. The piano has limited keys and DNA has limited codes. Music plays these keys in an infinite set of different ways creating all the music we have today. Epigenetics “plays” our DNA in an infinite set of ways that controls our body functions, brain development and personalities. It makes us who we are as a species and an individual.

Where are we going? We have invented marvelous technology that lets us leave the Earth. We still can’t go far but in time we will. Will we meet other intelligent creatures? Will they have similar DNA but different epigenetics? How did epigenetics (programming) come about? Many would say from a very intelligent creature (call it God, nature or an alien race). I don’t believe epigenetics just randomly came about any more than a computer game (which is technically a bunch of ones and zeros) just came about. It was programmed by an intelligent human.

Are we still evolving? What will we look like and be able to do in a thousand years? …a million years? Will we even be around? Something worth pondering….

How Incredible Our Bodies Are!

Friday, I posted a very important video from Dr. Lipton on how our cells are intelligent. They communicate with each other, reproduce, respond to stimuli, take in nutrients and get rid of waste. He discussed the fact that the nucleus with our DNA was NOT the brain of the cell but a database of blueprints to build things needed by the cells. The brain was external to the cell, the environment. It stimulates our cells in good and bad ways. Nutrients cause the cells to move toward the nutrients while toxins cause the cell to move away. Genes are turned ON/OFF by different stimuli from the environment. Cancer genes gets turned ON (epigenetics) because of things in our environment like poor diet & exercise, toxins and negative thinking. We are creatures made up of all the living cells in our bodies. They are trying to react to the various stimuli in our environment. Sometimes this causes a break down in control; resulting in disease. Sometimes our bodies overcome negativity and take in positive thinking and good nutrients and survives disease free.

We are amazing creatures designed to evolve with our planet. We are changing all the time but it takes time for the cells to catch up to major environmental changes. In the last few hundred years we have increased toxins, poor nutrients, introduction of toxins in our food supply and stress in our lives. All of this is overwhelming our cells. This causes diseases like cancer, heart disease, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, dementia, COPD and many other chronic diseases. Many times these diseases lead to premature death.

You can reverse this by changing your lifestyle! Eat better (non processed whole organic foods and less animal products), exercise more, think more positive and lower the stress on yourself. For more information see my book “Food for Thought”!

Exercise vs. Diet

On Monday I BLOGged on How Much Exercise we Need. Exercise is very important for many reasons. If you eat a very bad diet, you can not exercise your way to a slim body. If you are already slim, you may be able to maintain it. Exercising without a good diet will not save you from diseases. Look at how many athletes get cancer or die of a heart attack. We must find a combination of exercise and diet if we want to maintain our health.

The plant kingdom evolved with us over millions of years. All the nutrients we need that are missing from our bodies is contained in plants (fruits & vegetables). Modern medicines are based on nutrients found in plants. They are synthesized not actually taken from plants. We need plants to survive in this world.

Now fast forward to current time! The SAD (Standard American Diet) is a sad diet. Most Americans are eating less and less plants and more and more meat, sugars and salt. This type of diet will kill most people eating it. If you really want to protect your family, start improving your diet and start a family exercise program. It can be as simple as walking together.

Is Salmonella in Your Future?

Salmonella accounts for more hospitalization and death than any other food born-illness. Dr Greger says it’s on the rise. Watch the video below! Guess where most salmonella comes from … CHICKEN! Are you eating chicken because beef is bad for you? Do you believe chicken is healthier? It’s not! Beware of what you eat and how it is marketed to you. TV and radio plays a big role in what we believe. We are marketed to believe that chicken (white meat) is so much more healthy for us. The pork industry (which is red meat NOT WHITE) tries to back onto the chicken marketing campaign. “The other white meat”.
