Two great examples of DNA vs. epigenetics are:

  1. Our DNA is like a computer’s hardware and epigenetics like its software. The environment (food, thinking and physical environment) is like data to the software. In a computer system the software uses the hardware instructions to accomplish its goals. It reads data and acts upon it to complete the original programmer’s ideas. In our bodies epigenetics uses the DNA instructions (genes) to accomplish its goals. The environmental conditions are data that causes the epigenetics to meet nature’s goals.
  2. Our DNA is like a musical instrument and epigenetics is like the musician. The sheet music is like our environment. A musician reads the music and uses his or her skills to play the instrument (hardware). In our bodies epigenetics uses environmental conditions to play our DNA. Just like some musicians may play well and others may play badly; our environment causes our epigenetics to either play well or poorly.

Watch the video of Day 2 (use password: (DGAC011414).  This is a 5 hr and 43 minute video. These are people guiding our government on what is important for American health. You will not see this committees recommendations on TV. It is not popular with the drug companies, dairy and meat lobbies. Many speakers, especially those not associated with a product, recommended a plant-based diet to improve American health. So many studies show plant-based diet as critical to our health. We know we can cook plants in interesting ways that taste great. Why do we resist so much at the expense of our health. We are getting sicker as a nation and making our children sicker at earlier ages. Our schools feed junk to our kids. Lets take steps to stop this abomination. Making money is important but GREED is killing America.Food For Thought

Do you really watch a Drug Commercial?

We have so many drug commercial these days. Drug companies own our media. If the media tries to report on something they don’t like, they threaten by pulling commercials. It is a billion dollar business that controls everything we see and hear. As I watch these commercials, I am always amazed at the marketing techniques used. The side effects of the drug often causes the very problem you are trying to fix or worse. Many have cancer as a side effect. Do you really want to risk cancer and death for dry mouth or acid reflex?

Watch as the bad side effects are being listed. The video will show a couple in love or a family having fun. The video is sending a different message from the words. It is subliminally telling us everything will be OK if we take this drug. Try watch a drug commercial with your eyes shot! Do you get the same message?

Many of the symptoms drugs are supposed to fix can be corrected completely by a change in diet. As Hippocrates said, “Let thy food be thy medicine.”

My book, Food for Thought, explains how we have evolved into the creatures we are today. How our cells work together to form the human we are. It explains how epigenetics“fires” our DNA, turning genes ON or OFF. Sometimes this is a good thing and sometimes it is not. When it’s not a good thing, we get sick. epigenetics is a relatively new science. Every university is studying it now. The larger universities have epigenetic departments. What parts of our environment “fire” these genes is a major ongoing study. We know it is the food we eat, how we think and believe, the stress in our lives and exercise. Nutrigenomics is the study of which foods cause which epigenetic changes. This is an even newer science and still in its infancy.

What we believe is manufactured!

We live in a society where we watch TV and commercials and begin to believe what we hear. It becomes a fact in our minds. Other people talk about it and it supports our beliefs. So much of what we believe is based on marketing not facts. Here are some:

  1. Protein equates to meat! Meat does have protein in it but so does every living organism including all fruits & vegetables. Everything living is made of cells. The cell walls and machinery is made of proteins.
  2. We need to eat a lot of protein to be healthy. This is false. We definitely need protein but a relatively small amount. Extra protein is toxic to our bodies and must be handled by kidneys and liver. This is why excess meat-eating causes cancers to these organs.
  3. Old age equates to illness. This is so false. Some countries (that eat much healthier than we do) live longer and healthier their whole lives. Illness is a failure of our basic systems nothing to do with age. We do slow down as we age and eventually will die but we can live health to the end.
  4. We are living longer these days. This we hear on TV all the time. Drug companies say it is because of modern medicine (drugs). It is not true. Statistics show the top age we obtain has not changed in thousands of years. The average age has gone up. This is because accidents, attacks by predators, etc has significantly decreased. Drugs may keep us alive a little longer but the quality of live is poor.
  5. The medical community and drug companies will help keep me alive longer. FALSE! if this were true why is 45% of Americans dying of disease? If you are concerned about your health … Change your diet, lower your stress, think positive and believe in yourself.

Our Thoughts are so Important!

I have been talking a lot about how we are creatures that react to our environment. Epigenetics is a programming language that allows our DNA to adjust to our environment. If we are to survive as a species here on Earth, we must adapt quickly to environmental changes. Epigenetics is the process that allows this to happen.

Epigenetics reacts to several general stimuli, diet, stress, thoughts and belief. Thoughts are critical to our health. If we believe and are positive in our health, we will be healthy (placebo). If we believe and are negative that we will be ill, we will be (nocebo). Which are you?

How I got Started in Epigenetics

DNA and how it affects us has been a long time passion for me. In college I studied Physics. I remember the scientists of that time said “once we understand the DNA codes, we will know everything about life!” Of course this was false. The more we learned the more questions we had. At first epigenetics was ignored but later it became apparent that epigenetics was so much more important than genetics. It was a system that turns ON and OFF your genetics. This is very much like a computer comparing hardware to software. Software is so much more important than hardware but it couldn’t work without the hardware. Software turns on hardware instructions in a certain order thus creating the a program

Years later I studied everything I could find on epigenetics and wrote my book, “Food for Thought“. It was an attempt to document all the available knowledge on epigenetics that affects our health. It was written for the general population although many doctors and scientists read my BLOG and ask me questions. It was clear that epigenetics was affected by diet, stress, thought and belief. We are social animals that interact with our environment. This interaction can cause both positive and negative health effects.

The most import thing to remember is “YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH!” Thinks about that! Now read my research in the back of the book and watch the videos on my video tab. Try to lead a life:

  1. Free of stress (as much as possible)
  2. Watch your diet (eat more vegetables & fruits)
  3. Be positive (put out of your mind all negative thoughts)
  4. Believe in yourself

You will find your weight down, your health improved and your sex life better.

The study we spoke about yesterday suggests our brain cells reduce in size as we sleep. This allows brain fluids to flush away toxins from the brain. If our brains didn’t do this, we would be at risk of serious brain disease and death from the toxins. Our body is truly amazing in its ability to deal with its environment and develop controls to find what it needs to survive and avoid what is dangerous. We think opt the human brain as amazing but I think epigenetics or the programming of our DNA is amazing. Think of the intelligence built into it. It made each of us, it distinguishes between the various cell types in our body. It formed our brains so we could think. If we take a global view from 10,000 feet we see that our bodies and its epigenetics & DNA are a very sophisticated machine for interfacing with the environment. To what purpose? The purpose is to preserve and pass on our DNA & Epigenetics. These are forever changing from the earliest forms of life up to humans.
