This article lists the reasons organic is good for you. We speak a lot about organic and plant-based foods in this BLOG. They are important to normal health. Sure you know a ninety year old that doesn’t eat organic and only eats meat and potatoes. The truth is if we put 100 of these people in a study most would develop health issues and some serious ones like cancer or heart disease. Just like smoking, we all know someone or heard of someone that smoked to their 90’s but the simple fact is smoking causes cancer.

Dr Greger says being hydrated (drinking enough water) can affect their intelligence. ¾ of kids in study drank NO water between getting up and going to bed. Three new studies looked at school children. The smartest where the ones that had water to drink. Water is key to our bodies functions. If you want to function properly … DRINK WATER! Not soda, not juice. Water hydrates much better than other drinks containing water.

Dr. Greger is back with a video on the positive effects of plants (Phytonutrients) on toxic chemicals we ingest. The study shows that plant may have a dual role in protecting us from toxins: 1) they have far less toxins in them than do animal based products and 2) they may protect us from some toxins we get from animal based products. Mom was right, “Eat your veggies!”

We are as Lost as the Dinosaurs

We all know the dinosaurs were wiped out because of sudden environmental change that their epigenetics could not deal with. A meteor hit Earth and caused sudden climatic change. It would have been hard for them to adapt that fast. Some life did, like mammals and we are the result of that adaptation and survival. Today we have strong environmental influences that are killing us, maybe not as fast but as sure. Smoking causes changes to our epigenetics that ends up killing the body. It cannot adapt and move on. The big difference is the Dinosaurs didn’t cause their destruction but we are causing ours. Think about what you are doing to your body the next time you light up.

Is Organic Worth the Price?

You betcha! Although research is resulting in a mixed bag of conclusions, it seems obvious that our bodies can take a certain amount of toxins and handle them. We now live in a society where the amount of toxins has increased exponentially. These toxins can get stored in our cells and cause damage. Why should we eat non organic when we have a choice? I have had people say to me they don’t taste as good, which is ridiculous. I tell them to take the organic food and sprinkle Scotts fertilizer on them and you have non organic. But seriously, organic is not some weird thing a group of people are doing. It is a choice to eat better grown foods the way they were grown in our past. The other thing I hear a lot is it costs too much! My answer to that is you can pay now and remain healthy or pay later in medical co-payments. It’s your choice. How do you choose? Tell me your thoughts on this topic.

Do the Research Challenge

I challenge each and every one of you to do the research on the environmental effects on epigenetics and our health. I have 205 references in my book and those will lead to thousands more. It is your life and your family’s life that is at stake. The cost of not doing this challenge is pain and premature death for you and your loved ones. Thousands of years ago we didn’t have this problem. There were no mass produced foods, fertilizers and bad habits. We exercised daily to stay alive and ate naturally. Today we have become a society that wants everything easy. We want a pill for everything. Unhappy — take a pill. Overweight – take a pill. Sick – take a pill. It doesn’t work that way. If it did we would be a nation of happy healthy people and clearly we are not. It starts with you. Take my challenge. Learn and change your lifestyle. It can’t hurt you and it probably will make you a lot healthier than you are today.

Loss of Epigenetic Regulators causes Mental Retardation

In a recent issue of Neuron and Science, new findings showed a link between epigenetics and retardation in mice and humans. As scientists search the cause of more and more illness and disorders, they find it is not faulty genes but faulty epigenetics. Our genes are fine but how we play them is different. Sometimes this difference can lead to illnesses, disorders and death. We also know that epigenetics is widely influenced by our environment. The environment is everything from diet, stress, weather, toxins, to how we think. Our bodies are influenced by the entire environment we put them in. These influences can cause epigenetic changes to try to deal with the changing environment. Sometimes this works and sometimes it leads to problems that can make us sick.
