Olive Oil

America is getting fatter each year. It’s happening to younger and younger people. It is a very sad situation because this leads to more illness, chronic disease and unhappiness in life.  It can be avoided if we ate correctly! The four evils in America are Fat, Sugar, Wheat and Salt. We do need some fat for our brains to operate properly. Eat good fat like Olive Oil and avocados and fish. Avoid completely fried foods which use bad fats and are loaded with calories. Avoid sweets. This seems hard to do for someone who is addicted. After 3 or 4 days the sugar addiction goes away and you wont have as strong a craving. If you give in and some sweets, the cravings will continue on and on. Wheat turns to sugar in the body and can spike your blood sugar levels. Fruits are OK since the sugars are contained in fiber which release them slowly in our bodies. They do nor spike the blood sugar levels. Avoid cereals completely except oatmeal! Cereal has added sugar, salt and wheat. They will spike your blood sugar levels. Finally salt. Salt comes in supper high levels in processed foods. Don’t eat them! Soups can have as much as a half a day’s salt levels in one portion! Make your own from scratch and control how much salt you add. It is not the salt shaker that hurts (unless you use it excessively) but the processed foods that come with hidden salt that we can’t even taste. Remember you are in control of your health, not your doctor and certainly not your government. Decide today to take control back.

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), says Harvard Medical School Joslin Diabetes Center found that patients suffering from type 1 diabetes have higher blood sugar levels after digesting a high fat meal. We typically think of diabetes and lowering carbohydrates but we should also control fat. Low fat vegan diets have helped type 2 diabetes patients and now may also help type 1 diabetes.

Diabetes Alert Day

I have had this video on my BLOG before but it is so important for you to see, I am playing it again. If you are thinking of being a vegetarian, vegan or just cutting back on your meat intake. Dr John Kelly talks about research he has done on public health and nutrition. He specializes in heart disease, diabetes and obesity. He talks about a study of two groups with diabetes. One group ate mostly plant-based foods while the other group ate a diet recommended by American Diabetes Association (ADA). At eleven weeks both groups lowered sugar levels drastically. After eleven weeks the ADA diet leveled off while the plant-based diet continued to drastically lower sugar levels.

Almonds Anyone?

Man Made says adding almonds to any meal helps lower the overall Glycemic Index (GI) of your meal. The lower the GI the more healthy because sugars are assimilated slower and the risk of diabetes is less. I enjoy a small handful of almonds for a morning or afternoon snack. They curb your appetite, lessen your urges for snacks and are very healthy for you. Be sure you buy unsalted raw or unsalted roasted almonds. Eating sugar-coated almonds defeats the purpose all together.

Sugar, Sugar, Ah Honey, Honey – it’s all the Same

Are all sugars the same? Lately there has been a rash of TV commercials saying all sugars are the same. This is not true! Fruit has sugar that is mixed in with fiber. The package counts! The sugar by itself may be the same but dressed up in its package changes everything. The proof is in the Glycemic Index values. Raw and fake sugars usually are a 100 on this index (the highest you can go). Fruits are much lower 30 to 50 on the index. This indicates that are bodies can assimilate this type of sugar slower and the impact is less likely to cause diseases like diabetes.

Diabetes Can Be Cured!

Diabetes is a serious disease in this country. Our pancreas makes insulin which is a hormone that connects to each cells wall and allows the sugar to be admitted into the cell to be used as energy. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the lining of our pancreas is eaten away by our own immune system and prevents the manufacturing of insulin. Type 2 is when our pancreas is stimulated to keep making insulin because of the large amounts of sugar in our system. Eventually the cell tires of the insulin enabling sugars to be absorbed and shuts it down. We become so used to the insulin we ignore it. This is similar to drugs that require larger and larger doses to get the job done. Dr. Dean Ornish, MD in his book, The Spectrum, says diabetes is costing us 12% of the federal healthcare spending or about $80 billion. He also states that diabetes is totally preventable and if you have it you can reverse it. He provides a diet that moves you from a high fat meat diet to a vegetarian one. You can move a little and see major results. His book also talks about exercise and meditation. Remember diet, exercise and meditation or three major items that has a positive effect on your epigenetics. Change your epigenetics and live a happier and healthier life.
