So What is epigenetics anyway – Part 2?

How does this programming work? It’s a lot like computers. Computers have operating system code that benefits all the programs running and does common functions like clean-up and printing. Then there are normal programs that can do anything from spreadsheets to movie making. Epigenetics works a lot like this. The operating system code is what makes each cell a certain type (e.g. blood cell, skin cell, hearty cell, brain cell, etc.). Epigenetics turns on certain genes and off others making the cell react like the type it is becoming. Once done any cell divisions will be this type as well. There is epigenetics that runs the cell (this is the same from the lowest life forms, through plants to animals). This programs cell division, nutrient intake, waste explosion, etc. But cells are living thinking entities that have to change and react to their environments. They do this through epigenetics. What we eat, how we think, our hormones all cause epigenetic changes that can be good or bad for us. They are not trying to make us sick but react to something in their environment. This is how we change along with Earth’s changes and evolve. What we eat can be so different from what we ate 100 years ago (processed foods) that our cells do things that cause disease.

All of this is happening within each cell of our bodies. There are more cells in each of us than animals on our planet. Think about that! We are a living thinking reacting community of cells. If our cells get in trouble, we get in trouble. Our cells also talk to each other through epigenetics. This form includes messages that can affect nearby cells or travel the body to distant cells. Hormones are a good example of this. Our brain produces them and cells all over our body react to them. Puberty causes massive changes to our cells and their functionality allowing us to become sexual and procreate.

Everyone wants great sex! It is a part of our inner most brain. Modern society with our poor diets and lack of exercise and stress can cause our sex drive to move into low gear. How do we get it back in high gear? Diet is important since cholesterol can block veins and cause a man to be impotent. Exercise keeps us in shape as well. The Therapy Book lists the top ways to keep your sex drive in high gear.

They list the top ten things we can eat to keep us on track sexually:

  • AVOCADOS
  • ALMONDS
  • STRAWBERRIES
  • FIGS
  • EGGS
  • OYSTERS
  • NUTS AND SEEDS
  • WATERMELON
  • BLACK RASPBERRIES/BLACKBERRIES
  • GINSENG TEA

The only one I disagree with is eggs! They are high in cholesterol. Go to the link above to read what each of these does. Diet is not just about losing weight but being healthy and enjoying a great sex life. Happy eating!

Are Low Carb Diets good for you?

Dr Greger says “NO!” Watch the informative video below. Americans are bossed with lowering their waist lines. Many things, says Dr Greger, can lower your waistline including: An all diet of twinkies, chemo therapy but he says the goal is not to fit into a thinner casket but live with less weight. We were and still are into calories but calories don’t tell the whole story. A high calorie diet of fried foods vs a high calorie diet of fruits and vegetables are quite different. Yes keeping the waist line down is important but so is health and being alive.

Low carb diets are the rage but are they good for you? The answer seems to be NO! Low carb diets destroy our arteries allowing heart diseases to prevail. Don’t be taken in by the latest fad. Don’t look for quick fixes, they don’t exist. Here are some things to consider:

  1. Is your diet primarily made up of animal protein (meat, eggs, butter and cheese)? Consuming animal protein of more than 10% of your total calorie intake can lead to cancer and heart disease. – The China Study
  2. Is your diet primarily made up of processed foods. Eating at chain or fast food restaurants, canned, boxed or frozen foods. Even things that seem healthy like baby carrots are processed and unhealthy. if what you eats grown, it’s good for you.
  3. Is your diet primarily made up of sweets, fried foods, salty foods and fast foods? If so you are starving your body of much needed nutrients.

We need fats, carbs and nutrients for proper health. That doesn’t mean eat all the fats you want. Start teaching your family what healthy eating is. Show them by your example. You will trim down, be healthier, have better sex and be happier.

How Much Exercise do we need to Maintain Weight

Dr Greger says, “In 2013 2/3 of our nation was over weight and by 2030 about 1/2 our population will be clinically obese!” We are a nation of obese people. Obesity leads to many serious deseases that weigh heavy on our economy. He also says,”The US may have its first generation ever that has a shorter life expectancy than the previous generation. Think about that! When we look at eating vs exercise we see that the US is exercising more than it did years ago but we are consuming many more calories as well. These calories are typically in processed foods, fried foods, salty foods and sugary foods. We are eating less vegetables which is the only food group that can save our health. Read my book or older BLOGs here. Dr Greger also says tat a myth exists about sexual activity burning about 100 to 300 calories. That sounds great but when actually measured it’s more like 21 calories. It turns out to exercise enough to burn off the sodas and fast food we are eating may take hours each day. We don’t have the time. The answer is simply, CHANGE YOUR DIET!

Food for Thought!

My book, Food for Thought, explains how we have evolved into the creatures we are today. How our cells work together to form the human we are. It explains how epigenetics“fires” our DNA, turning genes ON or OFF. Sometimes this is a good thing and sometimes it is not. When it’s not a good thing, we get sick. epigenetics is a relatively new science. Every university is studying it now. The larger universities have epigenetic departments. What parts of our environment “fire” these genes is a major ongoing study. We know it is the food we eat, how we think and believe, the stress in our lives and exercise. Nutrigenomics is the study of which foods cause which epigenetic changes. This is an even newer science and still in its infancy.

The book is targeted to the average person on the street and is easy to read and understand. The book is available online at Barnes & Noble and Amazon in Hard and soft covers as well as eBook. Let me know what you think.

The more sugar we eat the more we need to get a dopamine response. This numbing effect causes us to want more and more sweets. Dr Greger says obesity might be a mental disorder. We keep eating sweets even though we know it’s bad for us. It turns out not only sweets are addictive but the whole class of fatty foods. Meats, cheese, milk, etc. The effect this has on our brain lowers other pleasures in life, like sex. If you want to live a better and happier life you need to got off your addictions!

Sweetness from natural fruits is different! Nature packs its sweetness into fiber causing the sugars to be released over time like a time capsule. This prevents spiking and the negativity associated with sugar. Learn to enjoy the natural sweetness of fruits.

In a recent men’ health online article, it was found that a vegan diet boosts men’s sex stamina. Junk food, fast food and animal protein can lead to heart problems and blood flow problems. This can greatly affect your sexual performance. If you’re looking to be a new dad, Harvard School of Public Health said a diet high in diary can lead to low sperm counts. Move toward a vegan diet and enjoy better sex.
