It is a difficult and heated discussion today. The government says there are no GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) wheat in production today. This is to say, if it’s true, that biologists are not changing the internal DNA of a wheat plant. We know from this BLOG that you can alter the epigenetic’s of a plant and have a very different organism ob your hands while the DNA stayed the same. Dr. Davis (Wheat Belly) says he never claimed that we had GMO wheat but wheat that was hybridized to cross non wheat plants with wheat plants. This causes internal DNA to change drastically. Is this GOOD or BAD? Time will tell but Americans seem to be getting very fat on our wheat while Europeans are not. I believe we are hiding the real issues behind terminology. It really doesn’t matter if it is a GMO plant, a hybridized plant or epigenetically modified. If by any process the plant is changed, it van have a different effect on humans. Our government needs to stop arguing definitions and start protecting people from profits. In the mean time I only eat non wheat products or European wheat products such as pasta.
