The Canadian Medical Association (SMAJ) says epigenetics is critical to normal development but abnormalities to this process can cause:
a) Cancer
b) Genetic disorders
c) Pediatric syndromes
d) Contributing factors in autoimmune diseases and aging
This process is critical for us to understand. The question that must be asked is NOT “What new drugs can be developed?” but “What changes to our lifestyles and environment can be made to reduce or eliminate disease all together?” This is a great article but it concludes with using this information to develop new drugs and procedures. Why do we look only at this part of disease prevention? We do need some drugs and procedures but why not better understand the source of disease and teach people to correct it? Cancer drugs are important but the campaign to stop smoking saved many more lives!
